Asim Khan who died after he was stabbed in Cardiff city centre was ‘lovely young man’

Members of the Grangetown community have paid tribute to Asim Khan, 21, who they said was ‘always happy and smiling’

Police have launched a murder investigation into Mr Khan’s death and a 27-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of his murder.

People have paid tribute to Mr Khan describing him as an “enthusiastic” and “very kind” man.

Professor Saleem Kidwai, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Wales, said Mr Khan’s death was a great tragedy.

“He was respected in the community and by his peers. He was a good student and a teacher said he was a very kind man.”

Mr Kidwai said community officers were working closely with the family and that CCTV in the area was being looked at.

Community worker Ali Abdi, from Grangetown , knew Mr Khan and said he was a “great kid with lots of friends and a family that love him”.

Mr Abdi added: “He was always happy and smiling. He was always looking after his little brother.”

Mr Abdi said police have been given extra funding to deal with knife crime , but that he felt education was also important.

“We need to be teaching children and young adults that carrying a knife is not a solution to your problems,” he said.

Sophie Greenaway, head of sixth form at Fitzalan High School, said: “Asim was an exceptionally hard working, quiet and polite pupil.

“He was incredibly popular with both his peers and staff members during his time at Fitzalan due to his friendly, charismatic and positive personality.”

Mr Swati added: “My interactions with him were very pleasant, the people who I’ve spoken to remember a joyful youngster who was very well mannered.

“The elderly remember his respectful ways and his soft spoken tone.

“His friends remember his positive and friendly attitude, his easy going nature, and his cheerful smile.

“He will be remembered and missed throughout his community.”

Many people have taken to social media to remember Mr Khan. Grangetown councillor Ashley Lister described him as a “genuinely lovely young man who has left us far too soon”

Shazia Ahmad wrote on Twitter that she taught Mr Khan and that he was “such a lovely, kind, sweet boy”.

Emergency services were called to St Mary Street in Cardiff at around 4.50am on Sunday.

They performed CPR on Mr Khan before he was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where he died.

Mr Khan’s family are being supported by family liaison officers.
